One of dozens of multi-storey luxury hotels that have risen along the seafront road lining Đà Nẵng’s long, sweeping municipal beach, the Four Points by Sheraton has slightly higher standards than most of its competing high-rise accommodations. Featuring a rooftop swimming pool combined with the trendy Horizon Bar – both with spectacular views – comfortable but bland rooms with sea-views, attentive but robotic service, and a good quality buffet breakfast, the Four Points meets the standards that most guests would expect from a large Sheraton hotel. It’s a solid choice for travellers who value quality, amenities, convenience and a seafront location above ambience, local character and charm. I stayed on a brief visit to Đà Nẵng during which, unfortunately, a sea haar hung over the city and beach, and never lifted.

The Location: Sitting on a corner on the seafront road, the Four Points is located at the centre-north of Đà Nẵng’s famous city beach. To reach the wide sands and rolling waves you have only to cross the street. For beach access it doesn’t get much better than this. However, for local life or city vibes, it’s not so great. Most of the blocks along this stretch of seafront road are towering hotels and apartments: it can feel a bit soulless, and there’s not much street food or street life. But there are plenty of large seafood restaurants (nhà hàng hải sản), and walking in either direction along the beachfront promenade is a good way to enjoy the location. If you stroll down some of the smaller streets due west of the Sheraton, you’ll find yourself in leafy local nieghbourhoods dotted with cafes and Vietnamese casual dining. But, Đà Nẵng city proper is further west, across the Hàn River. To get there, you’ll need a ride.

Hotel Grounds & Layout: A 36-storey monolith, the Sheraton is a curved structure wrapping around a street corner. An imposing building, the Sheraton isn’t a graceful piece of architecture, but its curved exterior does at least make it a bit softer than the angular concrete boxes that surround it. The lobby is an empty, echoey, high-ceilinged hangar. From here, elevators whisk guests up the many floors to long, bare, carpeted corridors softly lit by lamps. The building is split into two wings: the hotel on the north side; apartments on the west side.

Beach, Pools & Facilities: Đà Nẵng’s excellent municipal beach is a short stroll from the doors of the Sheraton. Good for beach activities, watersports and swimming the beach is the main focus of Đà Nẵng’s tourism. When the weather isn’t conducive to beach-time (as when I stayed at the Sheraton), you can always take the elevator to the 36th floor rooftop pool. Large and photogenic, the pool is good for lounging or swimming and the views are great. The architecture of the rooftop is quite curious: there are a lot of grey concrete pillars and arches, which are rather unattractive and look dated. There’s also a very well-quipped gym at the Four Points.

Guest Rooms & Décor: There are nearly 400 guest rooms at the Four Points. However, most are pretty similar in style, size and furnishings. Superior, Deluxe and Panoramic rooms are all 32m2 with a large window and balcony overlooking the city and/or sea, attractive bathroom with bathtub and separate shower cubicle (Superior rooms don’t have bathtubs), soft lamp lighting, carpeted floors, cushioned headrests, work desk and chaise lounge. Rates are usually between $80-$100 per night (including breakfast). The difference in price is essentially determined by the extent of the view: the higher the floor, the better the view, the more expensive the room rate. Comfortable, cosy and well-equipped, guest rooms meet expectations, but are a bit business-like and lacking in character (although I think this is to be expected from an international hotel chain like Sheraton). Interestingly, the hotel’s showpiece rooms – Corner Suites – are double the size of other room types and have much more extensive views, but the rates are only $20-$30 more.

Breakfast, Dining & Drinking: The hotel’s main dining restaurant is downstairs at The Eatery. This is where the daily buffet breakfast is served. A wide spread of Asian and Western dishes and decent quality (even the coffee is pretty fresh) makes this buffet a good one. The food is nicely presented and staff are friendly, but the dining hall is a bit bland. Up on the 36th floor is the Horizon Rooftop Bar. Focusing on locally brewed craft beers as well as cocktails, wine and bar food, this is the Four Point’s big Instagram-ready main event. There’s inside seating by windows, but it’s outside that the photo opportunities await: round tables and chairs are sunken into the serene waters of the infinity pool behind which panoramic views of Đà Nẵng city, beach and ocean sprawl into the distance. It is impressive, and the drinks are fine, too. Prices are lower than you might expect for such a bar. (I’ve written a full review of Horizon Bar on this page.)

Summary: The general standard at the Four Points is high: service, food, rooms and amenities all meet expectations. The views from the rooms and rooftop bar and swimming pool are fantastic; the breakfast is very good; the rooms are comfortable and well-made; staff are well-trained and attentive; the location is great for the beach. But this is ultimately a chain hotel: it’s a Sheraton. And that comes with an inevitable lack of character, charm, personality or anything that really places the hotel in Vietnam – you could be anywhere in the world. But if you’re a traveller and you book a room at a Sheraton, you should know what to expect. You get all the quality of a global hospitality brand, and no real sense of the country or locality you’re in. This is a hotel for package tourists, business people, or travellers who just want a break from, well, Vietnam.
